Earthing / Grounding

Grounding is the most fundamental technique for protection against lightning damage. You can  not stop a lightning surge, but you can give it a direct path to ground that bypasses your valuable equipment, and safely discharges the surge into the earth. Good earthings of lightning protection systems shall be able to withstand lightning currents and to disperse them quick and safely.

Each down conductor must have a dedicated earth termination system, formed by conductive elements in contact with the soil and able to disperse the lightning current in it. One earth termination per down conductor and minimum two electrodes / pits per termination is strongly recommended. For the lightning protection earthing, it is preferable to use vertical electrodes, 2 to 3 meters long, forming a triangle since this is the most adequate configuration for dispersing the impulse current of lightning as fast as possible.

Compliance to NF C 17-102 (2011) standard requires an earth DC resistance of 10 ohms for the lightning protection system. Copper bonded rods are preferred for the earthing system. Copper bonded earth rods made from high tensile low carbon steel with the molecular bonding of 99% pure electrolytic copper is generally used for the better conductivity and long life. To improve the soil conductivity (in turn reduce the soli resistance), grounding minerals are used along with the earth rods.

TerraGrip earthing compound is high conductivity graphite-based ground enhancing natural minerals with low solubility but very hygroscopic. It is made of an electrolyte base, which is what contributes to the conductivity of the mixture, which will be used around the earth electrodes at the time of Installation.

High effective resistance reduction

The resistivity of compound is far lower than that of the soil. During construction, gelling liquid (presence in the TerraGrip earthing compound) penetrates into the soil and freezes, thus forming grounding piece contacting with the earth electrode closely. Therefore, the effective contact area between the earth electrode and the compound layer are increased and the contact resistance between them is reduced which is beneficial to the current discharge. The natural feature of strong absorbent and moisture retention in the TerraGrip earthing compound ensures the retention of the ohmic value for a long time.

Earthing Compound is a mixture of minerals having the character of reducing the soil resistivity with absorbing & retaining moisture for longer periods by providing continuous resistance against corrosion.

TerraCarbo is a low resistance high conductivity carbon-based backfill material, which dramatically lowers the ground resistance system in difficult soil conditions. TerraCarbo contains no bentonite or concrete components, which in very dry conditions can cause shrinkage around the electrode, thus rendering it ineffective. The natural features of strong absorbent and moisture retention keep the soil moist for a long time, and reduce the surrounding soil resistance so that the contact resistance between the soil and core of the electrode.   

pH adjusting agent can maintain pH value around the grounding material within the scope of protection. Metal corrosion inhibitor will passivate the surface of the electrode rapidly after construction to prevent the corrosion of the electrode and it also works even pH adjusting agent stop working. The colloid formed through mixing compound with water during construction closely attached to grounding electrode after mixing with the soil, thus preventing oxygen and corrosive medium in soil from corrosion. TerraCarbo is an environmentally friendly compound.

LEESAS Ground Resistance Enhancement Minerals (GREM) provides the ability to substantially reduce soil resistivity in soils of the poorest electrical conductivity such as rocky ground or sandy soils. GREM comprises specifically selected compounds, which possess excellent electrical conductivity. 

When GREM is mixed with water and poured onto the earthing system and surrounding soil the powder and water react to form a gelatinous hygroscopic mass which forms an integral part of the earthing system, this effectively increases the surface area of the earthing system in contact with surrounding soil. GREM will not wash away under

seasonal conditions and therefore provides a permanent presence in working to improve and maintain the integrity of the earthing system. GREM is supplied in two seperate 5 kgs containers; one 5kgs kit contains a copper compound (Copper Sulphate), while the other 5kgs kit holds a mix of compounds which assist in the mixing process (Hardener).
